Dr. Timothy G. Nash, Senior Vice President Emeritus and Director of The Northwood University Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, joined Northwood in 1979 and received a B.B.A. from the university, an M.A. in Economics from Central Michigan University, and his doctorate from Wayne State University. Prior to July 1, 2020, Dr. Nash held diverse positions within Northwood, ranging from senior vice president for specialty programs and continuing and executive education, to provost of the Michigan campus, dean and chief operating officer of the DeVos Graduate School of Management, to Michigan campus academic dean and chair of the economics department.
Today, Nash holds the rank of professor of Economics and Business for the undergraduate program and the rank of professor of Economics and Public Policy at the DeVos Graduate School. Nash is director of the Northwood University Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (formerly the McNair Center). Under Nash’s leadership, the Center has produced numerous studies related to economic competitiveness for states ranging from Michigan and Ohio to Texas and West Virginia. The Center has also produced studies analyzing components of the U.S. and global auto industry, the Michigan and U.S. power grids, minimum wage and electric vehicles.
Nash’s travels, work, research and consulting have taken him to over 30 countries from China and Mexico to Poland and Switzerland where he has also participated in numerous academic colloquiums. Dr. Nash is an adjunct scholar with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland, an adjunct scholar with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in Washington, D.C., and is the former State Director of Economic Education for the clergy for the State of Michigan.
Over the years, Nash and his colleagues have conducted research and consulting for a number of Fortune 500 companies and industry associations, including GM/UAW/PEL, National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), Auto Care Association (ACA), Michigan Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Illinois Chamber of Commerce, Chrysler, Dow Corning Corporation, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the Ohio Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance, and the Business First Caucus of the Ohio State Legislature, among others.
Nash annually writes a sought-after economic analysis of the economy and its impact on the U.S. Automotive Aftermarket for the highly regarded Auto Care Association’s (ACA) ANNUAL FACTBOOK. Nash is also the designer of the ACA’s popular monthly Industry Indicator’s Report as well as its monthly Business and Economic Confidence Indices. Dr. Nash has addressed national and international forums related to the economy and automobile industry in China and across Europe and North America.
Nash has served or currently is on the boards of the Free Enterprise Institute (FEI) in Houston, Texas, Junior Achievement of Central Michigan, the Great Lakes Bay Economic Club, Gerace Construction Incorporated and My-Michigan Regional Health.
Nash’s opinions on economic issues have often been heard on Michigan and national television and radio stations, ranging from the National News Desk, ABC (Detroit and Flint), NBC (Flint), CBS (Saginaw), and FOX(Flint) to radio stations ranging from U of M (PBS), WJR (Detroit), WWJ (Detroit), WTCM (Traverse City), WSGW (Saginaw), WILS (Lansing), WKZO (Kalamazoo), WPHM (Port Huron) and WORD (North and South Carolina).
Dr. Nash is a frequently sought-after speaker who addresses audiences ranging from college and university classes, seminars, and fund-raising events, to corporations, civic groups and industry associations.
Dr. Nash has co-authored four books including When We Are Free (with foreword by Dr. Milton Friedman) and In Defense of Capitalism.
