Northwood Student Explores America’s Founding Through the Lens of Liberty

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, Northwood University student Noel Tokarev is contributing to the national conversation about the ideas that gave birth to the United States — and why they still matter today.

In a new essay published by Learn Liberty, “Happy Birthday, America: A Libertarian Reading of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution,” Tokarev examines the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution as enduring statements about the source, purpose, and limits of government power.

Rather than treating America’s founding documents as relics of the past, Tokarev invites readers to revisit them as living reminders of a revolutionary idea: rights do not come from government. Government exists to protect them.

That theme is especially fitting as Northwood advances Freedom Lights the Future, the university’s nonpartisan initiative recognizing America’s semiquincentennial and the enduring connection between liberty, limited government, personal responsibility, and free enterprise.

Tokarev’s essay reflects the kind of thoughtful student engagement Northwood seeks to foster — an engagement rooted not only in history, but in the continuing responsibility to understand, defend, and apply the principles of a free society.
