Northwood Professor, Alumna Support Innovation Over Climate Alarmism

Can free markets and innovation do more to protect the environment than government mandates and warnings of impending catastrophe?

That’s the question at the heart of a new essay by Northwood University Associate Professor of Economics and Philosophy Dr. Alex Tokarev and Northwood alumna Kristin Tokarev, published by Learn Liberty.

In “The Climate Panic Is Over. Now What?,” the co-authors examine decades of dire environmental predictions, questioning the effectiveness of policies driven by fears of imminent catastrophe rather than confidence in human ingenuity and technological progress.

From predictions of widespread famine and global cooling to warnings about rising temperatures and irreversible environmental damage, the authors explore how shifting forecasts have influenced public opinion and government policy.

They also challenge the economic consequences of sweeping environmental regulations, arguing that restrictions on energy production, consumer choice and economic activity can undermine the very prosperity that makes environmental progress possible.

Rather than dismissing the importance of protecting the planet, the Tokarevs advocate a different approach — one that prioritizes entrepreneurship, competition, technological innovation and abundant energy.

They point to nuclear power as an example of how innovation and sound energy policy could help address environmental concerns without sacrificing economic freedom or quality of life.

Their central argument reflects a longstanding principle of The Northwood Idea: Free individuals, empowered to innovate and compete, are better positioned to develop solutions that improve lives and expand opportunity.
