Northwood Faculty, Alumna Contribute to National America 250 Essay Series

As America marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Northwood University faculty and alumni continue to help lead important conversations about liberty, self-governance, free enterprise, and the enduring principles that shaped the American experiment.

A new essay co-authored by Dr. Alex Tokarev, Dr. Timothy G. Nash, and Northwood alumna Kristin Tokarev is now featured as part of Constituting America’s national essay series, “The Consent of the Governed: Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.”

The essay, “The Homestead Act And The People,” examines how the Homestead Act of 1862 reflected the principle that government exists to serve the people — not constrain them — by expanding opportunity, encouraging productive work, and enabling millions of Americans to pursue independence through property ownership and stewardship.

Dr. Tokarev is an associate professor of free market economics and classical liberal philosophy at Northwood University. Dr. Nash is director of Northwood University’s Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. Kristin Tokarev, a Northwood alumna, is a writer for Stossel TV.

Their contribution to Constituting America’s national series reflects Northwood’s ongoing leadership in advancing thoughtful, principled dialogue about America’s founding ideals. Through its Freedom Lights the Future initiative to celebrate 250 years of the American spirit, Northwood is helping students, faculty, alumni, and the broader community reflect on the Declaration of Independence, the promise of free enterprise, and the responsibilities of citizenship.
