Northwood Economist: Let Drivers Choose, Not Regulators

Can a government mandate give drivers better tires than a market shaped by their needs and choices? Northwood University economics professor Dr. Michael Makovi examines that question in a new article for the Independent Institute.

California has approved efficiency standards for replacement tires, saying they will save drivers money on fuel with little added cost. Makovi argues that the calculation may overlook what drivers value in a tire, including traction, tread life and price. Improving fuel efficiency can involve trade-offs, he writes, and a statewide rule could limit consumers’ ability to choose the balance that works for them.

His article makes a case for limited government and informed consumer choice. If shoppers need better information about tire performance, Makovi suggests providing clear ratings rather than requiring every tire to meet a particular efficiency standard. That approach would leave room for manufacturers to compete and for drivers to decide which features matter most.
