Is Socialism Truly More Humane Than Capitalism?

Capitalism is frequently criticized as an economic system driven by greed and inequality, while socialism presents itself as a more compassionate alternative. But which system has actually done more to improve ordinary people’s lives?

In a new essay published by Learn Liberty, Northwood University Associate Professor Dr. Alex Tokarev and Northwood alumna Kristin Tokarev examine that question with Dr. Krassen Stanchev, founder and board chairman of Bulgaria’s Institute for Market Economics.

The authors explain how voluntary exchange enables people pursuing different goals to cooperate for their mutual benefit. Competition encourages businesses to serve customers, employers to attract productive workers and entrepreneurs to direct resources toward people’s most urgent needs.

Socialism eliminates many of those incentives and the price signals that communicate what consumers value. Economic decisions instead become political decisions, placing greater control over production, resources and individual lives in the hands of government officials.

Drawing on the experience of Eastern Europe, the essay contrasts decades of shortages and economic stagnation under socialism with the rising living standards that followed the restoration of private property and free enterprise.

“Capitalism is the only humane economic arrangement,” the authors conclude, arguing that economic freedom is not merely an efficient way to allocate resources. It is a moral principle that respects each person’s dignity and ability to choose how to pursue a better life.
