Free Enterprise Deserves Champions; Become One
This Independence Day, America’s Free Enterprise University marked an exciting milestone: Learners who complete The Philosophy of Free Enterprise, Northwood’s complimentary, self-paced online course, can now earn a Certificate of Completion.
Launched in 2022, the course now offers 18 engaging lessons featuring easily digestible lectures about timeless free-market concepts, including the importance of limited government, individual responsibility, rule of law, and voluntary exchange, as well as the moral case for capitalism. Topics range from the history of innovation to the realities of inflation — each supported by animations, accessible commentary, and thought-provoking reading materials.
“This new certificate adds value to an already powerful course because it gives learners a tangible way to showcase their understanding of free enterprise,” explained Provost and Academic Vice President Dr. Kristin Stehouwer.
The final lesson, “Who Protects the Consumer?” — presented by Dr. Michael Makovi — challenges the common belief that government regulation is the only safeguard for consumers. Instead, Dr. Makovi demonstrates how competitive market forces and entrepreneurial innovation often protect consumers more effectively than government agencies.
The lecture can be viewed on Northwood University’s YouTube channel, along with the other lectures featured in the online course, which is possible thanks to the generous support of Northwood Alumnus Don Gottwald and his wife, Pamela, as well as the Thomas F. and Harriet S. Oakley Family Trust.
